Explore Canada: Ontario

Explore Canada:

With its truly massive size, Canada is an extremely vast country that offers an unlimited variety of hunting and fishing options to the traveling outdoor enthusiast. In this segment, fishing expert Joel Prunty explores the Provinces and territories in the Great White North in an effort to help you find the perfect location for your next trip. In this weeks edition, we explore Ontario!

Ontario, Canada:

Go ahead… Take a look at a map of Ontario. What do you see? That’s right… a land mass with almost as much water as it has land! In fact, this particular province has over 400,000 lakes, rivers and streams. With that in mind, it’s obvious as to why this area offers more options for freshwater fishing opportunities than anywhere else on earth. If that wasn’t enough to make you reach for your fishing pole, Ontario also boasts the world’s largest number of lodges, resorts and outfitters in every budget and preference for a true Canadian fishing experience. These facilities range from the rustic, remote fly-in wilderness fishing camps deep in the great Canadian bush, to luxurious lakeside cabins just a stone’s throw away from city activities.

The landscape of Canadian bush within Ontario has been notorious for an abundance of wildlife that is almost unimaginable for someone who has never seen it in person. The truth is, the fishing is no exception to that rule. Walleye, Lake trout, Pike, Muskie and bass thrive in the pristine waters of the Northwest Ontario were world famous lakes like Lake of the Woods, Lac Seul, Eagle Lake and Lake St Joseph reign supreme. If you are looking for a refreshing change of pace from your typical lodge vacation, try a week-long houseboat getaway adventure and immerse yourself in a unique outdoor experience that you will remember for a lifetime.

Not to be forgotten within its maze of amazing fisheries, Ontario’s prime hunting habitat provides hunters plenty of reason to visit Ontario as well. Moose are among the continent’s largest mammals, and trust us… Ontario has its fair share of trophies. Hunts for your chance to bag a trophy moose here typically start in mid-September to mid-November. Along with moose wielding massive crowns of antlers, Ontario also has no shortage of world-class black bears. Luckily for us hunters, there also isn’t a shortage of outfitters offering trophy bear hunting adventures throughout the province. Unlike moose hunting, however, Trophy bear hunting is typically only available in the fall.

If by now you haven’t already packed your bags, don’t worry, there’s more! Some of the highest quality whitetail deer hunting in the country is found in Ontario, with Northwest Ontario offering some of the best trophy opportunities in the world. Because of the sheer potential for trophies here, it’s not uncommon to hear avid deer hunters sharing stories of the massive trophy bucks that have been taken from this region.

With everything that the province has to offer, one of the best parts of Ontario is it is very accessible via road or air from anywhere in the U.S. If you don’t believe us…I guess you’ll just have to find out for yourself!
